10 Important Questions to Ask When Starting a Business

1. Why Do You Want to Start a Business

This is an obvious question but a vital one.

  • Are you an ambitious woman?
  • Do you crave more work-life balance?
  • Do you want more financial freedom?
  • Do you want to feel more fulfilled?
  • Do you have a passion project that you want to turn into a full-fledged business?

Try to figure out your motives as they can help you start a business that aligns with your personal and professional goals.

A key question to ask: What is the primary reason for starting a business?

2. Does Your New Business Idea Solve a Problem?

Most successful companies address a need or help people overcome challenges. The business you want to start should do that as well.

Have you researched your market, read through testimonials of similar products, and really tried to understand people’s pain points? Will your new course, service, or product offer a better solution?

A key question to ask: How effectively does your potential business solve customers’ problems?

3. What Is the Business Model (Can You Get Good Margins)?

Naturally, you want your business to be profitable and that means you need to understand the business model. The business model includes products, services, and expenses. Your business model will significantly affect your profit margins.

So ask yourself, is it a subscription model, one-time sales, or service-based model? These are crucial questions to ask when starting a business if you want to be financially viable.

A key question to ask: What is the primary revenue model?

4. Is the Business Model Scalable?

The secret to hitting 8-figures is to think scaleable. If you want maximum growth potential, you need to assess whether or not the business is scalable. Can you improve profit margins while increasing sales and diversifying your markets?

A key question to ask: What are the barriers to scaling the business (e.g., infrastructure, capital, talent)?

5. Where Do I See My Business in 3, 5, and 10 Years from Now?

We want women to think big, set audacious goals, and be bold. So ask yourself where you see this business going in the medium term and long term. This is an important question to ask when starting a business. Can you see your business succeeding?

The founder of Experiencegift and successful female entrepreneur, Loes Daniels‘s biggest tip for female entrepreneurs and businesswomen is to set ambitious goals for your business.

She says, “Project where you want to be in 3 years and create a roadmap to get there. Break down your goals into yearly and then quarterly milestones to ensure you’re on track.”

A key question to ask: What are the short-term (3 years), medium-term (5 years), and long-term (10 years) goals for your business?

6. Who Are Your Customers?

It is important to think about your potential customers. You should understand the business’s market reach, stability, and growth potential.

A key question to ask: Who is my main competition and where are my main markets?

7. Will I Need Help and Additional Support?

If you plan on starting a business, you will need help and support. If you need to hire someone else, factor in these costs. Can you outsource any work or pay for software services that could automate processes and save you time? One of the top challenges for female entrepreneurs is that they delegate less and struggle more with work-life balance, and falling into this trap could leave less time for big-picture work.

Be realistic about your capabilities, time, and budget.

A key question to ask: Will you need to outsource any work or bring someone on board?

8. Can You Bootstrap Your Business or Will You Need Investor?

This is one of the more obvious questions to ask when starting a business.

When you build a business from scratch without external investors, you can retain control of your business and grow sustainably. If you need investors, map out your expenses and think carefully about who you choose to fund your business.

A key question to ask: How much money do I need to start my business? Can I do it on my own and some help from relatives or close friends, or do I need to pull in an investor?

9. How Can Your Business Differentiate Itself?

You need to understand your market position, and how you can potentially attract and retain customers. Differentiation can be based on various factors, including product quality, pricing, customer service, and innovation

A key question to ask: What strategies can your business use to stand out in the market?

10. Is Your Business Niche Strong?

Another important question to ask when starting a business is is it niche strong? A startup that’s too generic can’t compete with existing businesses. Make sure that you focus on a niche, and zone in on it.

A key question to ask: What am I good at or what do I know a lot about?

Think Big, Be Bold

These are the best questions to ask when starting a business. They can help women set the stage for success, growth, and happiness. From thinking about whether your business ideas is scaleable to how you can differentiate yourself – these are all crucial factors that can determine whether your business will be successful in 2024 and beyond. These questions, coupled with essential principles of entrepreneurship, can set you up for success.
