Why I Left Corporate Life to Build a Global Business

When I first started my career, I did everything by the book. I earned my degree in Business Administration, landed a job at a top consulting firm, and steadily climbed the corporate ladder. On paper, I was “successful.” I worked at Deloitte and EY, two of the most respected firms in the world, learning strategy, management, and leadership. But deep down, I felt something was missing.

Today, I’m the founder of Experiencegift, a global platform selling personalized travel and experience gift cards in over 50 countries, and Businesswomen.com, an international community dedicated to inspiring women to think big. It’s been an incredible journey, filled with challenges, lessons, and rewards that I could never have experienced within the safe walls of a corporate office.

Leaving corporate life to start my own businesses wasn’t easy, but it was the best decision I ever made. Here’s why.

The Comfort Trap of Corporate Life

the comfort trap of corporate life

Working in corporate consulting gave me a strong foundation. I developed analytical skills, learned how large organizations operate, and built a valuable network. But it also made me comfortable, maybe too comfortable.

In many corporate environments, you’re trained to manage risk, follow established processes, and think inside the framework that’s already been built. After a few years, I realized I was spending more time optimizing other people’s ideas than creating my own. I wanted to build, not just advise.

Comfort can be a dangerous place. It can quietly convince you that “good enough” is the best you can hope for. But deep inside, I knew I was capable of more, of making a real impact, on my terms.

Listening to the Inner Voice

The decision to leave wasn’t made overnight. It started as a whisper, a small voice asking, “Is this all there is?” Over time, the voice grew louder. I craved more creativity, more ownership, and more freedom to shape something that aligned with my values: trust, care, love, and growth.

I had always believed in the power of experiences over things. Memories last longer than material possessions. That belief became the foundation for Experiencegift. Instead of buying someone a generic item, why not gift them a hotel stay, a flight, or an unforgettable activity?

With nothing but an idea and determination, I stepped away from the corporate path, not because I was failing, but because I wanted to succeed on another level.

Building Experiencegift and Businesswomen.com

building businesswomen and experience gift

Entrepreneurship is often glamorized, but the truth is, starting a business is hard. There were times when I questioned myself, faced financial uncertainty, and felt isolated. But those challenges forced me to grow in ways that corporate life never could.

Experiencegift now offers four brands (Hotelgift, Flightgift, Activitygift, and Traingift), operates in multiple languages, and serves customers worldwide. It wasn’t luck, it was years of trial, error, learning, and resilience.

Later, I founded Businesswomen.com because I recognized a glaring need: ambitious women often lack real-world role models who talk honestly about the messy middle between “starting out” and “making it.” I wanted to create a platform that didn’t just celebrate success but also acknowledged the struggles along the way.

Why More Women Should Consider Leaving Corporate

For women especially, corporate life can sometimes feel like fitting into a mold that wasn’t made for us. Entrepreneurship allows you to design your own mold, one that fits your values, lifestyle, and vision.

It’s not about recklessly quitting your job. It’s about listening to that inner voice, preparing strategically, and believing that you are capable of building something incredible.

The world needs more businesses led by women. We bring empathy, resilience, creativity, and a different approach to leadership.

If you’re feeling that same restless whisper I once felt, don’t ignore it. It might just be the start of something extraordinary.

Final Thoughts: Choose Growth Over Comfort

Leaving a stable corporate job to start your own business will likely be the scariest, and most rewarding, decision you ever make. It certainly was for me.

You don’t have to have it all figured out before you start. You just have to be willing to take the first step, trust yourself, and commit to the journey.

I’m grateful every day that I traded “comfortable” for “meaningful.” Because at the end of the day, the only real regret would have been never trying at all.
