Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Boucek excelled at the University of Virginia, leading the Cavaliers to four ACC regular-season titles and three NCAA Elite Eight appearances. Graduating with honors in sports medicine and sports management, she initially planned to attend medical school. But, the inaugural season of the WNBA in 1997 presented an unexpected opportunity for women. With the NBA Board of Governors saying “yes” to women’s basketball, Boucek said a “yes” of her own.

Boucek earned a spot with the Cleveland Rockers and later played in Iceland, where she won a national championship and was named Foreign Player of the Year. A career-ending back injury in 1998 shifted her path to coaching. Starting as an assistant with the Washington Mystics in 1999, she climbed the ranks in the WNBA, eventually serving as head coach for the Sacramento Monarchs and Seattle Storm.
