The 9 Principles of Entrepreneurship

Katia Beauchamp, CEO and co-founder of Birchbox says, “Whatever it is that you think you want to do, and whatever it is that you think stands between you and that, stop making excuses. You can do anything.”

2. Embrace What You Don’t know and Never Stop Learning

You can’t know everything, and that’s okay. But you can learn a lot of things and female entrepreneurs will need to expand their thinking. Adopting a growth mindset and being committed to both learning and failing is so important. Be strategic about what skill you want to develop, and if you don’t know where to start, try the 10 Best Business Books for Women in 2024.

Former CEO of IBM, Virginia Rometty, says, “I learned to always take on things I’d never done before. Growth and comfort do not coexist.”

3. Stay flexible

Being flexible is important for several reasons. Flexibility helps you to stay open to new ideas and it can help you to stay agile in unpredictable moments. Your ability to pivot and adjust your strategies can make your business stand out in a competitive entrepreneurial world, and give you that X factor.

Albert Einstein once said, “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”

4. Grit And Lots of it

Our modern world constantly changes and so will your business. You need to be able to weather the good and bad times and persevere when you doubt yourself.  Patience and persistence are non-negotiable principles of entrepreneurship, so grit your teeth and get ready for an exciting journey.

Reshma Saujani, social entrepreneur and founder of Girls Who Code, says, “Everything I’ve Achieved Has Come From Perseverance.”

5. A Vision or Big Goals

If you are thinking of breaking into the business world, you cannot blindly step into the entrepreneurial world and go where the wind takes you. You need a vision or a big, scary goal that you have written down. Your plan to reach that goal might change, but your vision should remain steadfast and unchanging.

Delia Lachance founded Westwing and is a true visionary. In an interview with BAZAAR, She says, “Be brave enough to realize your ideas.”

6. Problem Solving Ability

All entrepreneurs are problem solvers at heart and it is one of the most important principles of entrepreneurship. They either have identified an unmet need, know how to differentiate themselves, or make their product better than anything on the market. You need to be able to sit with problems, innovate, and think out of the box.

Founder of Bumble, Whitney Wolfe Herd shares, “Look at what is broken in society, figure out how to make it better, and then, around that, formulate a business.”

quote on the principles of entrepreneurship by Whitney Wolfe Herd

7. Emotional Intelligence

You cannot build a business by yourself – teamwork really does still make the dream work. You need to build a strong team and healthy work culture for your company to grow sustainably which means you need to be able to positively interact with people. You need to be aware of your emotions, and other people’s emotions, and how to use them to bring about the best results for them and your business.

Julia Hartz is the co-founder and CEO of Eventbrite and says, “There is no finish line to leadership.”

8. An Optimistic and Open Attitude

If being an entrepreneur makes you miserable, what is the point? If you are struggling to find work-life balance or are on the verge of burnout, you also need to assess your journey. Doing a work-life balance survey can help you gain control of your happiness and purpose. Your entrepreneurial journey should be exciting, fulfilling, and sustainable. Remember to take a moment to celebrate success, embrace the hard moments, and learn from startup mistakes.

Caterina Fake is the co-founder of the website Flickr and says, “The most successful entrepreneurs I know are optimistic. It’s part of the job description.”

9. Boldness

In the entrepreneurial world, being polite and meek won’t get you very far. Embrace assertiveness and seize opportunities for yourself. Speak up, negotiate confidently, and stand your ground when needed. Assertiveness can help you break through barriers and create your own path to success.

Sheryl Sandberg the former CEO of Facebook says, “Ask yourself, what would I do if I weren’t afraid? And then go do it.”

Work on Your Checklist

These principles of entrepreneurship mostly focus on your mindset and they can act as a guiding light for female entrepreneurs. If you want to succeed in the long run, we recommend that you examine this checklist, take out a red pen, and mark every item you need to work on. By using these points, you can develop unbreakable confidence, work with people, and be more bold in your approach. You can gather the ingredients for a successful business.

And if you haven’t ticked a few of these items, you can work on them. You can also pull in a business partner to fill the gaps. There has never been a better time for women to be entrepreneurs – it is time to be bold.
