Are you worried that women and entrepreneurship are synonymous with stress, overwhelm, and fatigue?  Have you wondered if being a female entrepreneur will actually make you happier?  Women in business statistics show that women-owned businesses have grown 114% in the last two decades. Let’s dive into women and entrepreneurship, what’s driving this trend, and how it could impact you personally.

Starting a business could make you happier, but not for all the reasons you think.

Why Are More Women Starting Businesses?

Women are increasingly drawn to entrepreneurship for several reasons:

  • Many women want to be entrepreneurs for improved work-life balance.
  • A lot of women want financial freedom.
  • Most importantly, women crave flexibility.

A lot of women reassess their careers after having children, as they realize that the 9 to 5 does not work with their new demanding lives and unpredictable schedules. So, they decide to become mompreneurs.

Women want their work to fit in with their personal lives and lifestyles, and not the other way around. They want the flexibility and freedom that comes with starting a business. Some women are very bold and ambitious and want to create financial wealth.

But, many women may still feel unsure about starting their own business.

The Top Hesitations for Women Who Want to Start a Business

Starting a business isn’t easy. It could involve long hours, resilience, and building a business could impact your personal life.

Here are some preconceived ideas that women may have about starting a business:

  • Women worry about the impact running a business will have on their families and the quality time they spend with them.
  • Building a business is unpredictable, and that can make women feel unsafe, unsettled, and anxiety-ridden.
  • It could make you feel financially stressed.  Can you find investors, make it profitable, and survive in the long run?
  • You may doubt yourself and your abilities. Can you be bold and brave enough to build something or buy the business you so desperately want to own?

But, here is the thing. A 9 to 5 isn’t perfect either.

And instead of focusing on the cons of starting a business, let’s focus on the pros. Here is what you need to know about women and entrepreneurship.

What Women Actually Say About Starting Businesses

Small Business Britain conducted a study that showed that 86% of women say they are happier since starting a business.

More than 50% of women said they have more flexibility, feel more fulfilled at work, and that they have more freedom to create and innovate. Starting a business can be an outlet for your passion and creativity, and working toward and achieving your goals can be a euphoric experience.

But an unexpected side-effect of starting a business is that you are guaranteed to grow, build confidence, and develop a whole new skill set.

The ability to innovate, make independent decisions, and pursue meaningful work contributes to making women happy. Being an entrepreneur means wearing many different hats, from being involved in HR to marketing strategies, and being a business strategist. There will be highs, lows, and learnings.
